About the Course Content

Course DescriptionThis course introduces the use of probability techniques, hypothesis testing, and predictive techniques to facilitate decision-making. Topics include descriptive statistics; probability and sampling distributions; statistical inference; correlation and linear regression; analysis of variance, chi-square, and t-tests; and application of technology for statistical analysis, including the interpretation of the relevance of statistical findings. Students use appropriate statistical techniques to analyze and interpret applications based on data from a broad range of disciplines. The course includes just-in-time support for these topics.

In STAT C1000 you learn to read and understand statistical information in the world around us, and you will learn to make decisions based on data. When you successfully complete STAT C1000, you will be able to do the following:
  • Statistical Literacy: Read and critique simple statistics-based studies in order to make an informed judgment about whether the statistical presentation or argument is valid.
  • Data Production: Analyze the design of a study to determine if the conclusions drawn from the study are valid or if the study is biased
  • Data Exploration and Representation: Investigate patterns in data to answer questions and compare data sets to look for a relationship between variables.
  • Modeling and Inference: Test a hypothesis about a population or make an estimate using the methods of statistical inference.
  • The Role of Probability in Inference: Explain how variability and probability are connected to statistical inference.

Course Student Learning Outcomes & Core Competencies

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs)

describe what students should be able to do upon successful completion of STAT C1000. These are assessed using exams, projects, and other assignments.

MCC Core Competencies are broad general education outcomes that demonstrate real-world skills. Each CSLO is mapped to at least one core competency – this means you gain experience with these skills in STAT C1000.
For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
  • Intellectual and Practical Skills
    • Quantitative Literacy
    • Problem Solving
    • Critical Thinking

About Attendance

In this class, we function as a team –teaching and learning together in small groups that are reorganized from one Module to the next. As a result, we will negatively impact our group-mates' grades if we fail to participate fully in each group discussion on time.

If you have a lot going on outside the school, please talk to me so we can support you in doing well in this course. Less than full participation in this course is extremely disruptive to the online learning model. If

  1. you fail to make any progress for two or more consecutive weeks, or
  2. you do not fully participate in three or more group discussions, or
  3. you fail to attempt three or more Unit Checkpoints,

I will call you first to see how you are doing and if there is anything we can do to help.

If you participate and work hard in this course, I assure you, you will do great at the end. However, if you quit participating in this class, PLEASE TALK TO ME, you should not assume that I would drop you. Should you choose to drop, ultimately, it is your responsibility to withdraw officially. PLEASE talk to me. The canvas course is designed so you can easily complete modules after modules in order. By participating in the online activities and completing all the required works, you will do great in this course.

🧩 Canvas Reading with Example Quizzes, Discussion Boards, and Labs

  • In this course, engaging with the content in sequence is essential for building a strong foundation. Canvas is set up to guide you through the materials in order—each page or activity unlocks only after the previous one is completed. 📖 Reading with Examples: Each module begins with readings and guided examples. These are not optional—they are critical to your success in understanding concepts before applying them in assessments. Completing these sections in the intended order ensures that you are prepared for the graded components that follow. This structure supports deeper learning and better performance on quizzes, discussions, and labs.
    • “Did I Get This?” Quizzes: To help reinforce your understanding, you’ll encounter low-stakes quizzes throughout the Canvas modules.

      • Each quiz may be taken up to three times.
      • Your highest score will be recorded.
      • These are learning tools—use the feedback from each attempt to improve and deepen your understanding.
    • 💬 Discussion Boards: Each module includes 0–3 discussion boards that offer opportunities to think critically and learn from your peers. To earn full credit:

      • 📝 Initial Post (6 points): Submit a thoughtful, good-faith response to the discussion prompt, drawing directly from the module readings and materials.

      • 🔄 Peer Feedback (4 points): Provide constructive and relevant feedback to at least two different classmates.
        • Note: Only the first two feedback providers per student are credited.
      • Participation Guidelines:
        • Comments such as " ", "*", "Hello", or other non-substantive responses will earn zero credit.
        • Focus on adding value to the conversation by sharing your thoughts, questions, or helpful resources.
    • 🧪 Written Lab Assignments: Labs are designed to help you apply course concepts to practical, real-world problems. These are typically completed during designated lab hours.

      • Expectations:
        • Labs must reflect your own thinking and work.
        • Honest mistakes are welcome—this is how learning happens.
        • However:
          • Blank submissions or copied/plagiarized work will earn zero credit.
          • Academic dishonesty may result in serious consequences as outlined by the MiraCosta Academic Integrity Policy.

Module & Unit Checkpoints

Checkpoint quizzes are strategically placed at the end of each module and unit in Canvas to help assess your learning and reinforce key concepts. These quizzes function as take-home assessments, offering the flexibility to complete them online at your own pace within the designated timeframe.

To ensure all students have a fair opportunity—especially in case of technical issues—each checkpoint allows up to three attempts, with only your highest score being counted. Detailed feedback is provided after each attempt to help strengthen your understanding and improve performance.

You can expect to complete approximately 20 to 30 Checkpoints. To support your success and provide flexibility, your lowest checkpoint score will be automatically dropped. This policy encourages ongoing effort and provides grace for learning curves or unexpected circumstances.

Unit Projects: Real-World Applications

Each unit project is designed to mirror real-world scenarios, offering you a chance to apply the concepts learned in this course to practical situations. These projects are an essential part of deepening your understanding and developing your skills in meaningful, hands-on ways.

To support your success, I am creating a series of instructional videos that walk you through each project step by step. These videos will provide additional context, strategies, and examples to help you navigate each task with confidence.

🌱 Learning Through Practice

You are strongly encouraged to work independently on these projects to maximize your learning. That said, mistakes are part of the process—if you submit a project and realize something went wrong, you are welcome to resubmit your work without penalty. The goal is growth, not perfection.

If you’d like support or have questions, we can go over your projects together:

  • During scheduled happy hour sessions
  • In Zoom meetings by appointment

Academic Integrity

Academic honesty is a core expectation in this course. Whether you’re completing checkpoint quizzes, unit projects, discussions, or lab assignments, all submissions must reflect your own original thinking and work.

To uphold fairness and learning integrity:

  • All submissions are routinely reviewed for originality and compared against prior student work and publicly available content (including websites like Course Hero, Chegg, or AI-generated platforms).
  • While honest mistakes are expected and will not result in point deductions, the following will result in zero credit:
    • Blank responses
    • Copied work from peers or the internet
    • Plagiarized material from any source

MiraCosta College maintains a strict Academic Integrity Policy, and violations of this policy—including plagiarism and cheating—can lead to serious consequences, such as:

  • A grade of F in the course
  • Disciplinary action, including possible suspension from the college

We welcome robust academic discussion and value your growth as a learner. Please make sure your work always reflects your genuine effort and understanding. Let’s prioritize learning and uphold the values of academic honesty—together.
