What, Why, and Why Not

Providing information to your course participants about time they should expect to spend engaging with the course can be an important strategy to help students. It can help set expectations and calibrate participation, as well as helping with their time management. Using a "pill" at the top of each page provides a consistent structure in which your participants come to know they can find that information. In addition to the reading and video times modeled in this Handbook, a course might also provide estimates for assignment/activity time on relevant Canvas items.

It's important to provide reasonably accurate estimates, of course. The Read-O-Meter is one tool that can help you gauge reading time.

How

The code for a "pill" is simple. When editing a page, you won't see the pill; the text inside the pill will show up as bulleted text. Just copying a pill from one page to another will generally work, as will copying and pasting code in the HTML view.
