When Tabs Get You Down...

1. Tabs are a great way to present a lot of content within a single window. They can be used anywhere in Canvas that offers an HTML or Rich Text Editor: Pages, Assignments, Announcements, Quizzes...

2. If you have a rather "busy" content area, using tabs can help tidy up in a way that offers students a more manageable means of viewing and accessing content.

3. You get to brag to colleagues (all nonchalantly): "Yeah, I use tabs in my Canvas courses. They're alright."

1. Working with tabs in both the Rich Text Editor and the HTML Editor can become messy and occasionally frustrating. This is manly because the way tabs display in the editor windows and the way tabs look after you click "Save" is different.

A good tip for avoiding headaches is to save your html code before you make a major change.

This way, when something funky happens, you can paste back in the last code that worked and try again.

2. Another downside of tabs is that they do not display as tabs when accessed with a mobile device. Instead, tab titles are displayed as bulleted hyperlinks to tab content. Below is a screen shot of what this page looks like on a mobile display.
