Required Foundation: MiraCosta Syllabus Compliance

All courses must meet required syllabus elements as noted in the MiraCosta Syllabus Checklist. But this is a starting point, not a destination. And deciding in which format(s) you'll offer your syllabus to your students is also an important design choice. First impressions matter, and the language, format, and ease of access of your syllabus is one of the earliest places where students will start thinking about you and your class.

Using the Native Canvas Syllabus Tool: Pros and Cons

Potential benefits

Auto‑populated course summary
The Canvas Syllabus tool automatically displays class due dates, which can help students see deadlines in one place.
Familiar navigation for students
Clicking “Syllabus” in the Canvas course menu is a familiar and quick way for students to access core course information anytime. (If you don't want students to use the Canvas Syllabus, be sure that the link is hidden from students on your course menu.)
Low setup overhead for faculty
Content can be created or pasted directly in the Rich Content Editor without using other tools.

Potential limitations

Design constraints
The tool prioritizes chronological information over clarity, which can make it harder to center instructor support, belonging, and course purpose.
Not optimized for mobile or scanning
Dense text and long scrolls can be challenging for students accessing the syllabus on phones or tablets.
Reinforces a “contract-first” mindset
The default layout often foregrounds rules, policies, and due dates rather than invitation, guidance, and help-seeking pathways.

Common instructor approaches

Some instructors use the Canvas Syllabus tool just to provide basic course information and deadlines, while embedding or linking from within it to a Google Doc or PDF of the full class syllabus, and/or linking to a Liquid Syllabus. Some instructors do not use the Canvas Syllabus tool at all, opting to construct a syllabus in the style they wish on a regular Canvas page within their Module 0 (welcome module) or simply linking to their syllabus from the course home page or elsewhere in their introductory material.

The Liquid Syllabus

The Liquid Syllabus is a student‑facing version of your syllabus designed to be:

Accessible and mobile-friendly
Visually welcoming
Easy to skim
Shareable via link in welcome letters or other communication

Instead of leading with rules and penalties, a liquid syllabus emphasizes:

Instructor support and communication
Student support services
How to get help early

A Liquid Syllabus is often created as a Google site; a simplified version might just be a Google document. Even if you don't create a Liquid Syllabus, viewing some examples might give you some ideas about ways you might revise your "normal" syllabus and/or provide welcoming and supportive language in your Canvas course. The Humanized Syllabus Walkthrough Video

A syllabus walkthrough video can help put a human face to all that great text you've prepared, and help students attend to the components that are absolutely essential to their success. Students are more likely to watch a 3‑minute syllabus walkthrough than read a multi‑page document.

Recommended practices:

No script (notes are fine)
Look at the camera
Keep it under 3–4 minutes, or create multiple videos if needed

This is about trust and presence, not polish. If you review the Liquid Syllabus examples above, you'll see short videos on each. Some videos provide an overview of the course, some are instructor introductions, and there are other brief videos intended to help convey to students that they are in the right place. Another type of walkthough video is the course walkthrough, which we'll discuss along with other components of the Canvas orientation module, on the next page!
