Self-care tip

Mindfulness meditation can be defined as "the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally" (Kabat-Zinn, 2017). According to the Mayo Clinic, overall evidence from clinical trials supports meditation's effectiveness for conditions such as:

Stress
Anxiety
Pain
Depression
Insomnia
High blood pressure

This is an important self-care tool not only for social work and human service practitioners, but students as well. Consider trying this out over the next few weeks to see how it impacts your life. There are many videos and mindfulness resources available and I've included the following video if you prefer to try this out as a guided practice.

Unit Summary

In this unit, you were introduced to social work and social welfare concepts and laid a foundation to build on in future units. We'll also began the first of a three-part series of lectures on the history of social work.
