Purpose:

This activity allows participants to demonstrate mastery of the third outcome for this session: Develop an effective plan for online office hours

Overview

“Frequent student-faculty contact in and out of classes is the most important factor in student motivation and involvement” (Chickering & Gamson, 1986, p. 3)

Faculty often hold office hours only to find themselves alone during the session (Griffin, Cohen, Berndtson, Burson, Camper, Chen, & Smith, 2014). We don't want this to happen to you! However, if it does, let's develop a plan that will make that time effective and useful for both you and your students. 

Intentional Office Hours

  • Create a discussion board for course questions and other concerns
    • Address these questions and concerns during the office hours session
  • Develop an agenda
    • Address student struggles and challenges
    • Provide a recap of the past week or preview what is coming up
    • Take this opportunity to clarify assignment expectations
    • Post the agenda for students using Announcements
  • Record and send out a link to the recording via Announcements
    • Going from Zoom to Canvas Studio to use student activity features

Instructions 

  • Develop a plan for your office hours by answering the following: 
    1. How are you going to promote your office hours and/or incentivize attendance/participation?
    2. What is your plan for your online office hours?
      • Some suggestions:
        • Provide a recap of the past week, an outline of activities assignments that are coming up, and outline what is currently happening in the class
        • Design prompts for a question/concern discussion board
        • Develop a low-stakes quiz as a diagnostic to determine what students are struggling with and cover those things during the session
        • Plan to cover course content and provide mini-lecture
    3. How can you encourage asynchronous participation?
      • Some suggestions:
        • Office hours quiz
        • A brief summary of what was covered
        • Additional questions and/or clarification needed

  • Submit a brief video using Canvas Studio where you explain your online office hours plan by answering the questions above
